Back to School Prayer Challenge

We believe every student deserves to be covered in prayer
as they go back to school.

—because prayer isn’t a last resort.

It’s our first move.
We pray because God listens. And when it comes to our kids and our schools, we don’t want to do this on our own power—we want heaven involved. Prayer doesn’t remove the hard stuff, but it brings peace in the chaos, strength in the waiting, and clarity when we’re lost.

“Because he bends down to listen, I will pray as long as I have breath!” – Psalm 116:2

What the Bible Says About Prayer

Prayer is one of the most consistent themes in Scripture—because it’s one of the most amazing gifts God’s given us. Whether you’re overwhelmed or just want to go deeper, these verses are here to guide you.

Psalm 116:2 | Because he bends down to listen, I will pray as long as I have breath!

James 5:13 | Are any of you suffering hardships? You should pray. Are any of you happy? You should sing praises.

1 Thessalonians 5:17 | Never stop praying.

Colossians 4:2 |  Devote yourselves to prayer with an alert mind and a thankful heart.

Matthew 6:6 | But when you pray, go away by yourself, shut the door behind you, and pray to your Father in private. Then your Father, who sees everything, will reward you.

Matthew 6:9–13 (NIRV) | This is how you should pray.

“ ‘Our Father in heaven,

may your name be honored.

10May your kingdom come.

May what you want to happen be done

on earth as it is done in heaven.

11Give us today our daily bread.

12And forgive us our sins,

just as we also have forgiven those who sin against us.

13Keep us from sinning when we are tempted.

Save us from the evil one.’

Mark 11:25 | But when you are praying, first forgive anyone you are holding a grudge against, so that your Father in heaven will forgive your sins, too.

Romans 8:26 | And the Holy Spirit helps us in our weakness. For example, we don’t know what God wants us to pray for. But the Holy Spirit prays for us with groanings that cannot be expressed in words

Philippians 1:9 | I pray that your love will overflow more and more, and that you will keep on growing in knowledge and understanding.

Philippians 4:6 | Don't worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done.

Colossians 1:9 | So we have not stopped praying for you since we first heard about you. We ask God to give you complete knowledge of his will and to give you spiritual wisdom and understanding.

Luke 6:28b | Pray for those who hurt you.

Proverbs 3:6 | Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take.

1 Timothy 2:1 | I urge you, first of all, to pray for all people. Ask God to help them; intercede on their behalf, and give thanks for them.

FAQ

A: You don’t have to say it right—just say it real. God’s not grading your prayers; He’s just glad you came.

A: As often as you can and every time it crosses your mind. Every school drop off, every game, every last minute homework assignment, and every worry is an opportunity to go to God.

A: You’re not alone. Start small. God’s presence doesn’t depend on how long you pray or the words you say —just your heart.

A: Let them hear you pray simple, honest prayers. They’ll learn more from what you model than what you explain.

A: Here are some prompts to get you started:

Pray for God’s presence at school… for his love, peace, and protection to fill the buildings and to surround everyone who enters.

Pray for the students… the ones you know by name, or the ones who are struggling. Pray they have good weeks, make wise choices, and stay healthy.

Pray for relationships…. Pray for friendships, for resolution of hurt feelings or misunderstandings or conflicts, for kindness to reach loneliness

Pray for the Christian students to be strengthened in their faith, to be confident in their identity in Christ, to share their hope and their light

Pray for mental and spiritual health

Pray for the teachers… for their energy and health, passion for teaching, wisdom and inspiration in how they teach and work with students

Pray for the Principal and leadership of the school and the school district

Pray for the support staff and the volunteers as they work with the students

Pray for safety from harm

Pick a time every week as the school year begins to stop and pray. Choose a prayer activity from the list below or do your own thing. Pray as a family, pray with your friends, pray alone… Just pray!

Read & Pray

R

Read one of the verses about prayer from this website or search for “prayer” in the YouVersion Bible app and find your own. Then pray about what you read and ask God to help you remember it in the coming week at school.

Talk About It

R

Talk to God about your week, talk about what happened last week, what you are looking forward to next week, what assignments or school activities you have, or how your friends are doing. Then ask God to help you and your friends this week.

Write It Down

R

Write down a prayer for the upcoming school week. If you need a writing prompt start with “Dear God, this week at school…” and keep going. Bonus activity: when you’re done, read your prayer out loud (sometimes it’s easier to read it if you haven’t prayed out loud before).

One Minute Prayer Focus

R

Think about the week ahead and what 1 or 2 specific people or things you want to pray for. Set a timer for one minute. See if you can pray about those 2 people or things for a full minute until the timer goes off.

Prayer Closet

R

Find a place you can be alone with God. Pray about the secret and private things about school you haven’t shared with anyone else.

Backpack Blessing Prayer

R

Grab your backpack (or lunchbox, or other school supply) and think about all the times and places that item will be this week. While holding the item, ask God to bless all the places and people around where you and your backpack will be.

Group Popcorn Prayer

R

Get in a circle and hold hands. One person starts the prayer for the school week then squeezes the next person’s hand or says their name. That person keeps the prayer going and passes it on. Try to have everyone in the group pray at least twice.

Big & Small Prayer

R

Choose one big thing and one small thing to pray about this week. It can be something important or something annoying, something exciting or something boring, something heavy and burdensome or something light and fun. Stand up big and tall to pray for the big thing and bend into a small ball to pray for the small thing.

Friend to your Left Prayer

R

Sit in a group. Each person takes turns praying for the person on their left until everyone has been prayed for. (Family alternate: each family member prays for a specific friend at school).

School Prayer Walk

R

Go to your school and walk around the playground, drive around the campus, or just stay in the car. Pray for all the things you can see – for the kids and teachers as they walk in the door this week, for the buses as they pick up and drop off kids, for the sports fields to be fun and safe.

Teachers & Staff Prayer

R

Spend time praying for your teacher(s), principal(s), and other school staff members and their upcoming week at school and at home.
